Elderberries have a long history as a cure for a variety of ailments. Currently, scientific studies are being conducted to test the accuracy of these health claims. Elderberries in the form of elderberry syrup have been shown to boost immunity, and decrease mucus production during colds and fight the flu.
lderberries naturally contain A, B, and C which are crucial in helping the body maintain optimal health and stimulate the immune system. They help your body fight disease. Plus, the bioflavonoids in elderberry syrup boost the body’s immune system by increasing antioxidant levels and viruses that damage cell walls. A daily dose can assist you in preventing both acute and chronic disease.
According to Natural News.com, clinical trials done in Norway and Israel showed a more rapid recovery time from flu using elderberries when compared to the prescribed medicine Tamiflu. They reported that the flavonoids in elderberry extract helped stimulate the immune system. Anthocyanins in the berries had an anti-inflammatory effect, reducing aches, pains, and fever.
Elderberry syrup makes colds and other upper respiratory symptoms more tolerable by reducing mucous secretions. Also, elderberries may fight swelling of the respiratory passages, which means less discomfort and trouble breathing and soothe a cough.
Elderberry syrup can also decrease the length and severity of your flu symptoms. Common flu symptoms like fever, chills, sore throat, muscle aches and fatigue may go away faster if you take elderberry syrup as recommended on the bottle. According to a study in the Journal of International Medical Research, patients given elderberry syrup recovered an average of 4 days faster from the flu than those not taking the supplement. Elderberries have even been shown in the labs to help prevent swine and avian flu strains.
Elderberry syrup provides the concentrated immune-supporting benefits of black elderberries in a great-tasting way. To make my syrup, I add additional herbs like cinnamon and ginger to offer a more balanced healing remedy. The ginger aids in circulation and will help quell any nausea that comes with a cold or flu. Cinnamon lends the awesome taste, calms the stomach and the nerves, and helps offset the blood sugar altering effects of a sweet syrup.
Raw honey is the only way to go, in my opinion, for the sweetener as it’s high in anti-microbial and anti-bacterial factors so gives an extra immune boost. To keep those properties intact, I add them after the liquid has been reduced and the decoction has been removed from the stove.
HOW TO MAKE SIMPLE SPICED ELDERBERRY SYRUP
Prep 5 mins. Cook-time 60 minutes
A simple home remedy to boost immune health and treat the common cold or flu
- 1 cup fresh or 3/4 cups dried black elderberries
- 3 1/2 cups of water
- 2 tablespoons fresh sliced ginger
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon or 1/2 cinnamon stick
- 1 teaspoon cloves
- 1 cup raw honey
Place elderberries, water, ginger, cinnamon and cloves in a pot. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer for 45 minutes to one hour.
Remove from heat and using a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth, strain out mixture. Transfer liquid to a jar and stir in 1 cup of honey.
Keep in the fridge sealed for 2-3 weeks.
