Ayurvedic Fermented Rice Water Hair Treatment with Herbs - The Holistic Highway

Fermented rice water, enriched with the essence of herbs, has long been used as a hair tonic in Ayurveda and hair is considered a reflection of one’s overall health, Natural remedies like fermented rice water are valued for their mane shining and scalp infusing benefits, When we infuse the rice water with the right herbs for your dosha, this hair treatment takes it up another notch.

Balancing Doshas with Fermented Rice Water:

Ayurveda recognizes three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—as fundamental energies governing the body. Hair concerns are often linked to imbalances in these doshas. This hair treatment with fermented rice water, when infused with herbs, harmonizes these energies, promoting overall well-being. The inositol, proteins, vitamins, and minerals in the rice water contribute to the nourishment of both the scalp and hair.

Herbs for Dosha-Specific Benefits:

Each herb included in the fermented rice water brings unique properties that resonate with Ayurvedic principles:

  • Horsetail (Equisetum arvense): Rich in silica, it stimulates scalp circulation, supporting healthy follicles. Ideal for all hair types, especially beneficial for oily scalps that can plage Kaphas and Pittas.
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): Promotes scalp circulation and soothes occasional scalp conditions like psoriasis, eczema or dandruff. Suitable for all hair types, fostering a harmonious balance.
  • Marshmallow Root (Althaea officinalis): With its mucilaginous quality, it moisturizes and softens hair, addressing the dry or brittle hair concerns of Vatas.
  • Neem Leaf (Zadirachta indica): Packed with minerals, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids, it boosts scalp circulation, cleanses, and strengthens hair. Ideal for irritated scalp or dandruff issues.
  • Nettle Leaf (Urtica dioica): High silica and mineral content, combined with natural astringency, supports overall scalp and hair health. Balances sebum for all hair types.
  • Peppermint Leaf (Mentha x piperita): The menthol compounds stimulate the scalp, offering an invigorating boost. Particularly beneficial for oily hair and soothing irritation or dandruff.
  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis): Known to stimulate circulation at the scalp, promoting hair health and beauty for all hair types. This is my personal favorite.

Ayurveda emphasizes a mindful approach to preparation. Here’s a simplified Ayurvedic version of making rice water, you can start by either soaking the rice or boiling the rice and then ferment it.

  • Soaking Rice:
    • Rinse 1/2 cup uncooked rice thoroughly and place it in a quart-size bowl.
    • Optionally stir in 1 Tbsp. of organic herbal powder of choice.
    • Cover with 3 cups of clean water and soak for 30 minutes.
    • Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh sieve into a clean bowl or jar.
  • Boiling Rice:
    • Rinse 1/2 cup uncooked rice and bring it to a boil with 2 cups of water.
    • Optionally add 1 Tbsp. of organic dried herbs.
    • Cook until rice is tender, then strain the rice water.
  • Fermented Rice Water:
    • Use rice water from either method.
    • Leave rice in the water for up to 24 hours to ferment, enhancing its benefits.
    • Strain through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer.
    • Use immediately or store in a clean jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.

Application and Considerations:

In Ayurveda, the application of remedies is as crucial as their preparation:

  • Hair Rinse Application:
    • Wash and condition hair as usual.
    • Pour rice water into wet hair, ensuring thorough saturation.
    • Massage into the hair and scalp.
    • Leave on for 5-20 minutes and rinse well with warm water.
  • Considerations:
    • Choose whole-grain rice for richer nutrients.
    • Be mindful of the type of rice due to potential arsenic concerns.
    • For dry hair, prefer fermented rice water and use it in moderation.
