How can I achieve fabulous skin?
Your skin is like a mirror – that can offer clues about how healthy your habits are and what’s happening to your internal systems. When we look at our skin and understand the causes behind any symptoms such as hyperpigmentation, acne, dryness, wrinkles, sensitivity, redness, and rashes, we can then improve how we look and feel. Let’s delve deeper into that.
There is only one cause behind imperfect skin: Dosha Imbalance
Here is what happens when there is an imbalance in each dosha:
- Vata – Excessive dryness, wrinkles on the forehead, discoloration, dry eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, brittle nails, cracked lips
- Pitta – Whiteheads, rashes, allergic reactions, burning, acne, rosacea, contact dermatitis, broken capillaries, burning eczema, and redness
- Kapha – Excessive oiliness, cystic acne, and all cystic conditions, lack of skin tone, double chin, puffiness, edema, oozing, and itchiness
The first rule of Ayurveda skin care is: cleanse, nourish and moisturize, no matter what type of skin you have. It is the very minimum you must do to maintain a healthy, youthful complexion.
Let’s look at Mary. Mary came to see me as she felt she was aging prematurely. She is 56 years old but felt that the clock started showing on her skin in her late 40’s. She felt she had more wrinkles and saggy skin than her friends of the same age. She was considering plastic surgery and wondered if the years as a lifeguard, when she was younger, had permanently damaged her skin. She considered plastic surgery because she wanted to age gracefully but felt she was running out of solutions.
If this sounds like you, you are probably a Vata and feel that you are aging more rapidly than your friends. It’s normal for our skin to age as we age because collagen and elastin wear down with time, as well as with greater exposure to weather and certain lifestyle factors. Still, no one wants to age more than we must. Luckily, there are remedies that don’t require a visit to a cosmetic surgeon or the purchase of pricey serums and make-up products that cost the earth and promise the world.
As a Vata, you are more susceptible to premature aging or excessive collagen loss. The good news is that we can change any genetic expression by changing your lifestyle. Genetics and collagen play a big role in forming the quality of Vata type skin, but fortunately, we can make improvements on those fronts by addressing the other root causes that affect genetic expression and collagen. We need to look at the root cause of any oxidative damage, hormonal imbalances, and nutritional deficiencies.
Healthy, glowing skin is a natural condition when mind and body are balanced. Ayurveda shows us that the formula to achieve balance is different for each person, depending upon his or her innate metabolic body type. As a result, there is no single type of treatment—not a soap, moisturizer, age cream, doctor’s prescription, natural remedy, fitness program, diet, or lifestyle change—that can work for everyone because not everyone is born with the same metabolic type. To find the right beauty program to reduce the signs of aging and enhance your skin, you must know what your Ayurvedic metabolic type is.
There are three basic constitutions. If you were a new client coming to see me, the first thing we would do is have a personal consultation to determine your metabolic type. Because we are not meeting face to face, I have designed a quick and easy quiz to determine your metabolic type.
Go to my skin care quiz to determine your skin type and then check out my personalized daily anti-aging skincare routines for each body type. The quiz will tell you your dominant metabolic type. Follow your metabolic type for the best skin care regimen for you.
THE EXTERNAL ANTI-AGING SKIN CARE ROUTINE
The first rule of Ayurveda skin care is: cleanse, nourish and moisturize. No matter your metabolic type or what kind of skin you have, this routine is essential to counteract the daily effects of stress, environment, and the skin’s natural cell degeneration. It is the very minimum you must do to maintain a normal, healthy, youthful complexion.
Take a look at the daily cleansing, nourishing, and moisturizing routine that is right for your metabolic type and special rejuvenating treatments for every part of the body from head to toe. This total anti-aging routine, which features exfoliating face masks, Ayurvedic health care, rejuvenating body baths, and seasonal skin care tips, is ideal for your metabolic type, no matter your current skin condition.
These treatments are external and are vital to achieving a flawless complexion and an all-over healthy appearance. You can have the greatest skin care in the world, that is right for your metabolic type, but it won’t make that much difference in the long run if you drink, smoke and live on caffeine and junk food while being subjected to constant stress. This anti-aging skin care regimen alleviates only the manifestation of disease and aging, not the cause! For that you must also cleanse the mind and body internally, where all health problems begin.
