Chocolate Mousse.

A pleasing sweet treat that’s packed full with nutrition, this chocolate mousse is always a hit wherever and whenever I serve it. If you keep the main ingredient secret, almost no one will guess that it’s the avocado that gives this mousse its body and creamy texture. Kids will scarf it down and ask for more, not realizing there’s actually green goodness in it and plenty of healthy fat to keep the body energized and the metabolism fired up. A dessert or snack that’s great for the skin, nails and hair too. All that coconut makes it a cooling dessert – ideal for the Pittas in the house. Its a healthy dessert for Kaphas and a grounding sweet dish for Vatas. 

Eastern View

Avocados with their rough exteriors are a strange looking fruit. It belies a creamy texture that you would normally associate with dairy. The fruit of Avocado and the oil extracted from its pulp is extremely beneficial in the treatment of Vata issues such as scaly dry skin, psoriasis, constipation, rough and aged-skin, muscular stiffness, dry hair, joint pain, insomnia, improper blood circulation and wrinkles. Avocados  ground while they nourish. Their heaviness is comforting and calming, redirecting the scattered attention of Vatas to calm them their excitable central nervous system. Avocado is also a promising remedy in the treatment of Pitta imbalances like poor metabolism, ulcers, tension, heartburn and inflammatory conditions. Avocado is used as a healing skin tonic for Pitta inflammation and for reducing bad cholesterol and chronic constipation. Avocados also boost libido, regulates insulin secretion, fights against free radicals, enhances ojas (strength, endurance and brilliance); and for is used for treating alopecia, insomnia and joint pain.

Western View

Avocado contains many vital nutrients and essential phytochemicals. These phytochemicals have incredible benefits on human health. The oil extracted from avocado has several dermatology based applications. The unsaponifiable part helps fight against osteoarthritis and can combat hypercholesterolemia which can help in treating hypertension, diabetes and inflammation in the body. Since inflammation has a pivotal role in atherosclerosis, avocado has a positive effect on decreasing this inflammation. Most fruits are known for their high carbohydrate content, however, avocado is a fruit that is well known for healthy fats. The percentage of unsaturated fatty acids is more than its saturated fatty acids, therefore, avocado can play an indispensable role in promoting cardiovascular health. The seed extracts were also examined and were found to contain insecticidal, fungicidal and several other anti-microbial properties. 

Ingredients: 

  • 2 ripe avocados
  • 1/4 cup coconut nectar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened carob or raw cacao or cocoa powder
  • 1-2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • a pinch of sea salt
  • optional shredded coconut for garnish

Directions:

Blend all ingredients together in a food processor until creamy. You can start with one tablespoon of coconut oil and see if you need more.

Sometimes if it is not creamy enough, I add a splash of almond or coconut milk. I like mine nice and thick, so when you hold the food processor upside down, it doesn’t move. 

Spoon into serving bowls and enjoy!

This packs well for lunch and stores in the fridge for several days.
